Maxell Ltd. v. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., et al.
Analysis Group was retained to work with the consumer electronics manufacturer Maxell, the plaintiff in a patent infringement case against Samsung. Maxell alleged that Samsung was making, using, and selling products incorporating Maxell’s patented technology without a license. The patents related to an unlocking feature for smartphones, a search-and-identify facial recognition process, and a system that improves usability and manageability of video content.
An Analysis Group team led by Vice President Mickey Ferri supported Managing Principal John Jarosz, who filed an expert report and provided deposition and trial testimony quantifying damages for Samsung’s alleged infringement.
A federal jury in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas found that Samsung had willfully infringed on the three patents and awarded Maxell $112 million based on a running royalty for each patent through the trial.
