Millstone Power Station: Providing support for achieving Connecticut's clean energy goals

Clean power is often touted as a way to reduce the impact of air emissions on the environment. Several years ago, the State of Connecticut committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its economy to 80% of 1990 levels by 2050, primarily through clean, affordable electric power. The state has made progress to date, including through the electricity supplied by Millstone Power Station, a two-unit nuclear plant that is the New England region's largest power generation station, supplies nearly 60% of the state's electricity consumption and supplies 98% of Connecticut's clean electricity.

In this report, “Millstone Power Station: Providing support for achieving Connecticut's clean energy goals,” Analysis Group Senior Advisor Sue Tierney and Manager Craig Aubuchon present the results of their independent analysis of the value provided to Connecticut and New England consumers by Millstone Power Station. The authors examine the potential impact on Connecticut's electric supply if the Millstone generating units closed before the end of their current operating licenses. They analyzed the New England region's electric system performance, with and without Millstone's contribution as part of the generation mix, and found that closing the station would substantially impact power prices and electricity bills for consumers, increase GHG emissions, and increase reliance on natural gas as a power source.
