In the Transition to a Decarbonized Economy, NYISO Will Need to Continue to Closely Monitor Fuel and Energy Security During Cold Winter Conditions, According to New Study by Analysis Group Energy Experts
November 14, 2023
At the request of the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), the organization that administers the state’s wholesale electricity markets and ensures the reliability of its power system, an Analysis Group team prepared a forward-looking assessment of the fuel and energy security of the New York electric grid during winter operations over the next seven years.
As New York transitions to a decarbonized economy in the coming years, it will need to integrate new resource technologies while keeping a close eye on the availability of sufficient resources to maintain reliability under severe winter conditions. Recognizing this risk, the NYISO asked Analysis Group to update and expand on its 2019 fuel and energy security risk assessment.
In its updated report, Analysis Group evaluated the NYISO’s system-projected supply-and-demand balance for three future winters under extended cold weather conditions, including an extreme cold snap. The report was authored by Principal Paul Hibbard, Vice President Joseph Cavicchi, Associate Grace Howland, Senior Analyst Jack Graham, and Analyst Marios Vafiadis.
