November 21, 2023
At an event exploring competition and sustainability issues, hosted by Analysis Group and Global Competition Review in London, Vice President Joshua White led a fireside chat and moderated a panel discussion with UK regulatory and legal experts. In his opening remarks, Mr. White provided an overview of the growing relationship between competition policies and environmental initiatives in the context of climate change, noting several policy shifts in Europe and the US. He then led the expert discussions covering sources of tension between competition policy and sustainability, as well as additional aspects of competition policy, including “greenwashing” and consumer welfare; the potential environmental abuse of dominance; the assessment of environmental benefits in merger reviews; and the role of state aid in policy assessment.
Ann Pope, from the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), and Simon Holmes, from Oxford University and the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal, participated in the fireside chat, while the panel discussion included Maurits Dolmans (Cleary Gottlieb Steen Hamilton), Jay Modrall (Norton Rose Fulbright), and Vanessa Turner (the European consumer organization BEUC).
