Summary of Experience

Professor Buchmueller is an expert in health economics who has published extensively on issues related to health insurance and health policy. In addition to his research on insurance markets, public programs, and health care reform in the United States, Professor Buchmueller also has conducted research on health care systems outside of the United States. His research has been published in top academic journals, including the American Economic ReviewAmerican Economic Journal: Economic Policy, and the Journal of Health Economics. From 2011 to 2012, Professor Buchmueller was Senior Health Economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers, and from 2023 to 2025, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation. In that role, he directed the Office of Health Policy, which did research on Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, prescription drug markets, and other health policy issues. He is a former member of the board of directors of the American Society of Health Economists and former editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Health Economics. Previously, he was an editor of Medical Care, the Journal of Economics and Management Strategy, and the Berkeley Electronic Journal of Economic Analysis and Policy.
